operating system, only from xfinity. announcer: nbc bay area news starts now. good evening, everyone, i'm ter terry. diane is off for the evening. lanes were shut down more than four hours after a drive by shooting. it happened at 1:00 on i-580. mark matthews is live on the scene. what is happening right now. >> reporter: terry we are looking down on the lanes that are moving again. they were closed down most of the afternoon. chp say this is is what happened. at 12:40 this afternoon, a blue suv, ford, was moving into the

fast lane on 580 eastbound, just before regatta boulevard. the chp officers heard it crashed. they were headed to the crash hen they started getting phone calls saying somebody else was shooting at the vehicle when it sped down the freeway. when officers got there, it was flipped over and the man inside was dead. they found bullet holes in the car. they shut down all lanes to collect evidence. traffic backed up to the richmond bridge. tonight, richmond police are asking for help. >> at this point, it's still a preliminary investigation. we don't have a motive. detectives are trying to determine what the motive might have been for the shooting. >> reporter: richmond police hope that anyone who saw the shooting here on 580 saw that other car that they don't have identified, will call into police headquarters.

they need a description of the vehicle. homicide detectives are working to case tonight and so far, the only description they are giving of the man who was shot is he was a young man in his 20s. reporting from the 23rd street overpass on i-580, mark matthews, nbc bay area news. >> thank you very much. we are following another developing story on the 15-year-old stow away. we are told he's back in california. kimberly joins us from the teenagers home. any sign of the young man? >> reporter: no sign, yet. the family has not spoken to us, yet. but, authorities in hawaii have. they said the teenager is safe and off the island of maui. again, no word from the family on when he will actually be back home in santa clara. his father flew out earlier this week to get his son. he is on a flight right now

returning to the bay area alone. according to the mercury news, a judge transferred the 15-year-old out of the custody of the hawaii department of human services and into the custody of santa clara's department of family and children's services. a social worker likely escorted that teenager to the south bay. april 20th, federal officials say he climbed a fence and got into the tarmac and climbs into the wheel well of a jet. he was found several hours later in maui's main airport and hospitalized for breathing. nearly two weeks after he got on to that plane in the wheel well of a 757, headed to maui, he is now back in the bay area. live in santa clara, nbc bay area news. >> kimberly, thanks very much. a train killed a man in

richmond. it happened about 1:45 this afternoon. according to officers, the man was walking near the railroad tracks when hit by an amtrak train. officers say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident. >> two homes burned today. several people and their pets were able to get out alive. firefighters got the call about noon. the fire went to three alarms. fire firms say one of the homes belonged to former city manager, frank. his daughter and her friend were inside when the fire started. an elderly woman and two dogs were rescueed from the second home. the cause is under investigation. an elderly woman dead after a house fire in oakland. it was engulfed in flames when they got there. they were able to get it under control. neighbors warned them, someone was inside that home. >> we have several 911 calls

coming into our dispatch center. they pretty much alerted us that someone might have been in the house or trapped, so, that really extradited our response. >> reporte >> the victim's name has not been released. no firefighters were injured. a geological survey says a 2.7 magnitude earthquake struck south of livermore around noon. a 2.3 hit 20 minutes later. a few dozen people called to say they felt it. no reports of damage or injuries. new at 6:00, a price tag on the marijuana gathering in golden gate park. the unofficial celebration cost the city more than $100,000. the golden gate superintendent said at least 15,000 people attended the event. the extra police presence cost

$43,000. the clean up, they collected 20,000 pounds of trash that cost $23,000. dozens of people were arrested after the gathering. the warriors season coming down to one game. they are facing off with los angeles clippers in an hour and a half. the warriors are hoping to make it to the second round. they forced a game seven after a close win on thursday. we are going to hear more about a boost to the warriors lineup that will slow down blake griffith. tonight's game seven is almost overshadowed by what's going on off the court. the northbound will apount a temporary ceo to run the los angeles clippers. the team's owner, donald sterling, banned for life after racially charged comments. now, the woman that made the recording is speaking out for the first time. she was asked, point-blank, if

she believes donald sterling is a racist. brian mooar has the story. >> reporter: the woman at the center of the donald sterling scandal says she's convinced the owner of the los angeles clippers is not a racist. >> through his actions, he's shown she's not a racist. through his actions, she's shown to be a very generous and kind man. if he was a real racist, then why would he help the world the way he has? >> reporter: in an exclusive interview with barbara walters for "20/20" she says she's his right hand. she's the woman who recorded an infamous conversation with sterling, which he asked her not to post photos of herself with african-americans and not to bring african-american people to the games. she defended sterling.

well, if you are headed to downtown san jose, you are going to see a lot of cinco de mayo decorations. police are patrolling the

downtown area. the gang task force is going to be on patrol. sources tell nbc bay area certain deputies are looking for parole or probation violators targeted as possible troublemakers. this is in response to previous cinco de mayo celebration in the area. this is from 2007. george sanchez who owns a restaurant has seen the good and bad when it comes to cinco de mayo celebrations. >> i think people are coming down with a conscience. i see the demographics downtown changing, the economy is changing. the residents living down here. you see a big change in the people down here. >> police will be in force all weekend long and on the lookout for drunk drivers. a person is fighting for their life after a hit and run accident early this morning. police say a driver sped through a red light, broadsided a car

meteorologist rob mayeda is here now to talk about the forecast. as we head into may, the chances of anything in the way of any significant rain goes away, huh? >> it does. it really drops off this month. we could see a slight chance of drizzle tonight and a chance of showers for the beginning of the workweek. outside right now, we are seeing the san francisco style of microclimate across the bay area. cooling off the temperatures. 65 degrees. wind out of the northwest, 20 miles per hour in the santa clara valley. back to san francisco, low clouds on approach to the west. 64 degrees. notice, we are only two degrees difference there from san jose to san francisco. the marine air is inland now. 63. sunny downtown but chilly. you can see the low clouds over the top. we are watching the wind speeds anywhere from 15 to 25-mile-per-hour. notice how strong the winds are

inland here toward sala know county and livermore. it will continue to pull in low clouds. as the marine layer thickens up, we could see misty skies tonight and tomorrow morning. cool and breezy evening. we are seeing that right now. overnight, low clouds thickening up. could give us drizzle to start the day. partly cloudy skies and a mix of low clouds, at times for morning and high clouds move sboog the north bay. we see a system dropping for the end of the weekend that could give showers next week. the future cast tonight, possibly areas of drizzle as we watch the low clouds move into the bay area and tomorrow, partly cloudy skies. what will be interesting is the system dropping in on monday. at this point, it is dropping over land so there's not a lot of moisture to work with. the north bay hill tops and the center of low pressure tracks inland during the early morning hours tuesday. that will be the window of opportunity for possibly seeing

showers in the bay area. we go toward monday. partly cloudy skies monday. watch what happens here toward the afternoon. sonoma county and napa county could see an isolated shower around 2:00. overnight, we watch the system track to the south. there's a piece of energy that might be enough to get lift to the moisture around 2:30 in the morning to give us a few showers. the system clears out. then, for the end of next week, high pressure is going to build in. we are going to see the opposite going from cool to hot again. you are seeing that play out in the seven day forecast at the bottom of the screen. tomorrow, another cool day. drizzle for the morning. 70 in san jose. 60s around the peninsula. to the north bay, upper 60s to only near 70 in napa. the trivalley is staying cool. tomorrow, low 70s in the forecast there. the temperature trend to get you back into the workweek, numbers cooling toward monday. mid to upper 60s there. notice the numbers jumping up

the falcon chicks that top the san jose city hall have their identifying leg bandings. it requires the biologists like this one repelling the roof from the bird's nest every year. the parents flew over screeching angry. it doesn't just identify the birds, it determines their gender. the bigger the ankle bone, the more likely it is female. they are going to move out and find their own homes. too this job seekers. tesla had to shut down a job fair in fremont today. amazing, hundreds of job seekers

waited outside the factory. it was supposed to go from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 this afternoon. they wrapped up at 10:00 a.m. a tesla spokeswoman said they decided to close the fair because all the people were clogging traffic and police were concerned about what might happen, didn't want anybody to get hurt. one woman's car broke down before she had a chance to drop off her resume. >> people go through a lot to try to work out here. circumstances that people have to go through like, yeah, i knew my car was acting up, but i'll do anything to get a job. >> i was kind of disappointed we couldn't go inside to meet the people. we go inside to see what's going on inside. they were not letting us go inside. >> well, the good news here. tesla urged those unable to interview today to apply online

on the company's career site. in the south bay, hundreds of people showed up to walk for autism. nbc bay area's own kris sanchez emceed the event. it's one of the largest event that is autism speaks puts on. 7,000 people participated in the walk including councilman sam. i think you are going to be talking about the warriors tonight. >> that's right. we certainly will. the warriors in that big game seven tonight. we have the giants and as in early start. highlights from both teams are next. jermaine o'neal, do or die game seven in l.a. a live report from staples coming up.
